As I sit down and reflect on how communication flourished over the last centuries, I realized how fortunate we are as citizens of the Digital Age to grasp the privilege to be able to send messages across the entire globe with the power of a single click. At the same time I wondered, when was the last time people primarily send their handwritten letters enclosed within an envelope to those they want to relay their message to? Perhaps it has quite been a long time, dating from years and years prior to this time. Although some are still doing so, the vast majority of the population now relies to the ever-changing comfort technology offers.

The process of communication is defined by the technology of communication, the characteristics of the senders and receivers of information, their cultural codes of reference and protocols of communication, and the scope of the communication process. The electronic “global village” envisioned by McLuhan 50 years ago is now fully operational. Communications technologies are expanding our connectivity at an accelerating rate. Yet despite their obvious impact on how we all live and work, it’s not easy to grasp the depth of this transformation or its implications for our future, in part because our social and economic institutions are evolving much more slowly. This essay focuses on one specific consequence of the shift to electronic media – that they’re changing how we understand communication itself, both conceptually and in our everyday lives. As background, I compare the emergence of computerized media with the much slower transition that took place in ancient times, from oral to literate culture. As written text gradually became the dominant medium of cultural evolution, it fostered a distanced, objective mode of thought that made deeper levels of interpersonal connection seem irrelevant to the serious business of civilization. Today the new media vastly extend the power of published text, but they also revive the immediacy of real-time participation that belongs to oral culture. They make possible a new appreciation of the depth and complexity of communications systems, both at the physical level and in human interaction.

This article looks back into ancient history and brings us up to the recent past telling the story of how we humans fought geography and distance to communicate across the planet. Though much of the world as yet to make a single telephone call, every person is affecting by our collective ability to span t e time zones and communicate meaningfully. From time immemorial we have been separated one from another by time, distance, culture and language. Have things really changed? Let's travel back in time now and look at how our ancestors succeeded and sometimes failed in their compulsion o communicate with one another.
The history of human communication can be measured by a series of paradigm shifts: speaking, writing, printing, and now, interconnecting globally. Government and business need to invest in research and innovation to explore how the communicative context is changing, how individuals will be affected by their interconnection with electronic objects, and what transcendent values will define the collective vision of reality.

The harnessing of steam and electricity in the mid-nineteenth century created a new world of possibilities in business, politics, and public life. In no realm was this transformation more momentous than in communications, an activity commonly understood at this time to embrace not only the trans-local circulation of information, but also the long-distance transportation of people and goods (Matterlart 1996, 2000). For the first time in world history, merchants could convey overseas large quantities of goods on a regular schedule and exchange information at a speed greater than a ship could sail. New organizations sprang up to take advantage of this "communications revolution," as this transformation has come to be known (John 1994). Some were public agencies; others were private firms. Each was shaped not only by the harnessing of new energy sources, but also by the institutional rules of the game. These rules defined the relationship of the state and the market, or what economic historians call the political economy. This chapter surveys this transformation, which we have come to view with fresh eyes following the commercialization of the Internet in the 1990s. It features case studies of two well-documented global communications organizations that originated in the nineteenth century - undersea cable companies and news agencies - which we have supplemented by a brief discussion of other important global communications organizations: radio, telephony, and the mail. We have not surveyed film, a topic addressed by Peter Miskell's chapter in this Handbook.

Communication Technology and Globalization
Globalization is the impact of spurt of advancement in communication technology. The communication growth is so rapid that globalization has to double step in attaining the pace with such technology achievements. Technological inventions of very recent past now look like decade old when compared to current advancements and inventions. Communication technology has become a driving force of globalization. The study in this paper analyses the impact of growth in communication technology on globalization.
Communication advancements of nineties caused widespread growth when communication technology revealed its real potential. Growth in communication network brought out by information technology witnessed a stream of expansion of products and ideas breaking geographic boundaries. The impact was so great that communication development brought out by IT became the catalyst for global integration. Consider goods manufactured in China were available in those countries where China is not even involved diplomatically. Everything is moving dramatically fast. Few years earlier desktop computers were operated by small numbers of people and the main sources of document production were the typewriters. Now even desktop is giving way to laptops and such other versions of computerization that conveys faster information through the wonder of the centuries called ‘internet’. Imagine mobile phones have become so necessary that communication is virtually impossible without mobile phones.
Internet has revolutionized the all round activities so much that no place in the world is far from the other. “Websites, chat rooms, instant messaging systems, e-mail, electronic bulletin boards, and other internet- based communication systems have made it easier for the people of common interests to find each other, exchange information, and collaborate with each other.” (CSIS, 2006). Internet has made the status of globalization so strong that the importance of information on internet does not go waste like tangible goods. The internet information remains useful for years to come as internet has emerged as network built upon the exchange of information.
The most important feature boosting globalization is the information travels very fast and at very negligible cost. Now “we hear much of the creation of a borderless world and the end of nation state. It is true that satellites and the internet have greatly increased the speed at which the information of cultural and informational impulses is propagated throughout the globe.”(Jonathan M. Harris and Neva R Goodwin, page 62).
The world is aggressively marching towards a free economy. Competition has become high because information about goods or services produced in a remote part of world is made available through ever advancing communication technology. There is Electronic Fund Transfers (EFT) boosting businesses in every part of the world. Emergence of an organization called SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) has ensured a reliable electronic financial system. All this is happening because of advancement in communication technology. The fact is that “the current cycle of globalization is in part the product of new global media, information and communication technologies that instantly connect people, organizations, and systems across vast distances.” (Marcelo M. Suraez-Orozco and Desiree Qin- Hilliard, page 17).
It is believed that globalization is an extensive complement to the advanced communication technology. It not only makes the business entities powerful but also moving the world towards an integrated society. That is the reason that communication technology is being considered as the real facilitator of the process of globalization.

Globalization is very influential on all operations of an organization, especially in regard to communication. This is often because communication on a global scale requires more thorough and cohesive clarity in order to uphold a business that functions optimally. Globalization illustrates a number of challenges in relation to communication such as language barriers. In the case that language barriers are eliminated, misunderstandings or even conflict can occur as a result of cultural or ethical differences. Organizational communication directly contributes to the performance of a firm. As such, it is integral for globalized collectives to recognize the potential risks of poorly managed communication and address them in ways that are appropriate. Globalization can be seen as the fundamental factor that allows firms to facilitate effective and appropriate communications for widely diverse workforces. With constant progress in technological utilities, firms enjoy much easier access to tools and methods that remove obstructions, educate, and promote effective cross-cultural communication. This is another example of the extent to which globalization can influence organizational communication.
In a highly globalized environment, a diverse workforce is likely to benefit from a participatory leadership approach. This leadership style promotes an increased democratic dimension instead of a hierarchical top-down system. This approach also observes employees as stakeholders within the firm and assures that they each have a unique voice that has value. The central focus of a participative leader is to empower employees, especially throughout decision-making processes. This is because this leadership approach recognizes that certain employees may be more affected by certain organizational changes and decisions and should have the opportunity to participate in the process of change. While value-based leadership is also beneficial, participatory leadership is more appropriate within a globalized setting as it prioritizes the values of the diverse workforce above organizational needs. Additionally, the more democratic and involved style allows for the discussion of issues, conflicts, miscommunication, and changes. As a result, employees within a globalized setting will be empowered to rely on their cultural and ethical values while experiencing the values of others as well as the integrity both leadership teams and colleagues have for their cultural background.
The first organization selected is Southwest Airlines. Southwest has referred to participatory leadership in the past, such as during the 9/11 attacks during which the former CEO had made the decision to retain employees despite dropping profits. The corporate citizenship and social responsibility statement of the company can be divided into three categories including society, the environment, and firm governance. The company’s mission statement and core values express the need to connect people to what they find important in their lives while providing services that are reliable, low-cost, and friendly. The responsibility statement expresses the necessity to serve clients, employees, and communities within the social sphere. In terms of environmental concerns, Southwest aims to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 and proceed with a 10-year sustainability plan (Southwest, 2022). Southwest also supports a business model that upholds its corporate values which include a continuous and stable financial performance while providing clients with affordable prices. These values are also presented in their workplace culture and customer services which rely on globalized perspectives to function cohesively.
American Airlines is noticeably larger than Southwest but considers similar elements vital for corporate social responsibility. The firm offers an especially detailed and thorough approach to its environmental policies. The firm aims to improve carbon neutrality, include more evidence-based standards, and increase fuel efficiency. Similarly, the safety of passengers and employees is vital as American Airlines works to renew fleets and equipment at appropriate intervals (American Airlines, 2020). This is essential as American Airlines currently reports the largest fleet internationally in terms of plane units. American Airlines focuses on the improvement of its workforce through the promotion of diversity, equality, and inclusion. These values are upheld through activities such as training, retention, recruitment, and providing relevant support to employees. The firm also emphasizes the importance of stable growth and the maintenance of current operations. This is especially relevant with the effects of the pandemic on the market for air travel. Overall, American Airlines can be said to have an increased focus on environmental policies in relation to their corporate and social responsibility.
Both firms address the areas of social factors, the environment, and finance and governance. However, American Airlines has a more thorough and sustained focus on the effects the firm has on the environment. This is logical due to the size differences between the companies. Similarly, Southwest benefits and values positive interactions between the firm and employees, and customers. As such, their statements prioritize the ways in which both employees and customers can be better served. Both companies feature little greenwashing as much of their environmental policies are based on science-based changes and long-term suitability plans. As such, the firms reduce the promotion and sales of ‘green’ products and address environmental issues on a larger scale that is related to the fuel use of planes. Both firms address goals in regard to social responsibility but lack policies and ambitions in regard to social accountability. Having social accountability can benefit firms, especially in a globalized sphere, as they can implement guidelines when solving conflict or addressing any forms of failure to meet responsibility standards.
Both firms operate within an internal market and therefore correlate with globalized values. While Southwest has a more substantial focus on promoting employee values, American Airlines implements policies to diversify its workforce. Both firms are able to utilize techniques that promote these changes while being considerate of a globalized setting. These include bias and inclusion training, achieving certification for equal pay, and advocacy for laws that promote equity and justice. While these firms operate mainly within the U.S, they rely on international client bases as well as employees that work at their destinations outside the U.S. As such, the firms aim to promote a higher quality of work throughout the countries in which they operate.
A leadership approach that can greatly benefit a firm operating within a globalized space is situational leadership. Situational leadership aims to modify a leader’s behavior appropriately to the performance needs of employees and the firm. The style can be outlined in four distinct steps which include an analysis of an individual’s performance, the adaption of the leadership, communication with employers in regards to the performance needs, and an advance to higher performance. Due to the diverse and evolving nature of globalized collectives, this leadership style provides necessary advantages to increase communication and effectiveness. As such, the situational leadership style is appropriate for both firms.
