Becoming a nurse in Oklahoma takes dedication and education. The amount of time you spend in school and training depends on what type of type of nurse you want to be. 

The Oklahoma Board of Nursing issues licenses for licensed practical nurses (LPNs), registered nurses (RNs), and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). The Oklahoma State Department of Health handles certified nurse aide (CNA) certification. Oklahoma belongs to the Nursing Licensure Compact , which makes it possible to receive a multistate license that lets you practice in other Compact states. 

The Sooner State's educational system is producing fewer nurses than it needs, forcing healthcare organizations to rely heavily upon out-of-state travel nurses to fill the workforce. This was a problem before the pandemic , but the situation worsened under COVID-19 as more nurses left the workforce. Working conditions in Oklahoma may be stressful in the near term as healthcare staffs stretch themselves thing, but there may be plenty of open positions.

How To Get Nurse Aide Certification in Oklahoma

Aspiring Oklahoma CNAs must complete an approved training program before passing a test with written and hands-on skills sections. Completing these steps allows CNAs to add their names to the Nurse Aide Registry.

CNA certifications need to be renewed every two years. The renewal application includes an Affidavit of Lawful Presence declaring the candidate's legal immigration status. Applicants must also provide proof of at least eight hours of work as a CNA in the previous two years. 

How To Get a Practical Nurse License in Oklahoma

Aspiring Oklahoma LPNs can apply for a single-state or multistate license depending on personal preference. They can also choose licensure by examination — which involves taking the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) practical nursing version — or licensure by endorsement, which requires them to prove that they have an LPN license in another state

In any case, LPNs must graduate from a board-approved LPN training program. They also need to provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency and pass a background check.

Oklahoma LPN license renewal takes place every odd-numbered year. Renewal requires that the LPN worked at least 520 during the previous two years or completed 24 or more hours of continuing education.  

How To Get a Registered Nurse License in Oklahoma

Individuals must complete an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program as the first step to becoming an RN in Oklahoma. Licensure-by-examination candidates then need to pass the NCLEX-RN, while endorsement candidates must submit proof of RN licensure elsewhere. Either group can choose to apply for a single-state license or a multistate license. 

All applicants must also demonstrate their U.S. citizenship or permanent residency and successfully complete a criminal background check. 

As with LPNs, RNs must prove that they worked at least 520 during the previous two years or completed at least 24 continuing education hours to renew their licenses. RNs renew every even-numbered year by the end of their birth month.

How To Get an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse License in Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Board of Nursing recognizes four categories of APRN:

• Certified nurse practitioner (NP)
• Certified nurse midwife (CNM)
• Certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA)
• Clinical nurse specialist (CNS)

APRN license applicants must prove that they've finished a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree and hold a nursing certification in one of the four specialties. The state of Oklahoma also requires proof of citizenship or legal immigration status alongside a background check. After receiving their license, any NP, CNM, or CNS may apply for authority to prescribe medication; CRNAs can't prescribe in Oklahoma.

APRNs renew their APRN license along with their RN license every even-numbered year.

Prelicensure BSN admissions requirements

Requirements for enrollment in the Herzing University online Bachelor of Science in Nursing program include both a GPA requirement and minimum benchmark scores on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS):

Direct Entry BSN enrollment requirements

Rn to bsn option admissions requirements.

To enroll in Herzing’s RN to BSN online program, prospective students must:

• Live in a state where Herzing University is authorized to offer the RN to BSN program i
• Hold a current, active and unrestricted license as a registered nurse (RN) in the same state in which they practice. 
• Hold an Associate degree or diploma in nursing from a nationally or regionally accredited college or university.

Conditional admission may be available for those that are awaiting the date to take the National Council Licensing Exam (NCLEX). Students enrolled in Herzing University’s RN to BSN online program must maintain RN licensure throughout the program of study.

BSN Bridge Option admissions requirements

To qualify for the BSN bridge option, you must be a licensed practical nurse (LPN), paramedic, military medic, respiratory therapist, or cardiovascular technologist.

Additional requirements include both a GPA requirement and minimum benchmark scores on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS):

Alternative entry points : if your GPA is too low, you may be eligible to enroll in our online Associate of Science in General Studies – Pre-nursing program (2.25 GPA required). 

If your GPA is 3.0 or higher and you’ve already earned a non-nursing bachelor’s degree, you may also be eligible to enroll in our online MSN Direct Entry program .

The minimum criteria for consideration of applicants seeking admission to the Online RN-to-BSN program include:

• Acceptance to Northwestern Oklahoma State University. (**Separate NWOSU application required** Use the  Online Application for Admission )  
• Evidence of satisfactory academic achievement with a minimum of a 2.5 GPA in all nursing courses and a 2.5 GPA overall.
• Graduate of an ACEN (formerly NLN or NLNAC) approved Associate Degree or Diploma Nursing Program.
• Filing of the student's official college transcript(s) with the Registrar's Office and a copy to the Division of Nursing.
• Submission of a completed  application form for the Online RN-to-BSN Program  to the Nursing Division. 
• Submission of two references from teachers or employers with at least one being from a nursing instructor or supervisor. 
• Online RN-to-BSN Applicant Reference Form  (to be filled out applicant)
• Online RN-to-BSN Person Serving as Reference Form  (to be filled out by two of your references)
• Resident of the state of Oklahoma. Out of state residents considered on an individual basis.

Record of Arrest or Commitment for Mental Incompetence

Policy 

It is the responsibility of the Division of Nursing to inform current and prospective students who have been arrested/convicted, for any charge or have been committed by a court for mental incompetence, of the rules and regulations of the Oklahoma Board of Nursing related to initial licensure. 

Arrest/Convictions include felonies or lesser charges

If a student has been adjudicated as mentally incompetent or mentally ill (that is, committed by a court as mentally ill), the student may be denied admission to the nursing program.

Faculty who are concerned with the welfare of the student with a “mental health history” have the right to explore with the student the past health history, current treatment, and/or request a recent statement from the student’s physician.   The student may be referred for mental health counseling.

1. The student informs the Division of Nursing Chair of any records of arrests and/or commitments for mental incompetence.  This includes events occurring while in the program. NOTE: This is a requirement.  Failure to do so may lead to dismissal from the program.  

2. The Division of Nursing Chair informs the student of the Oklahoma Board of Nursing rules and regulations and the possible implications.

3. The Division of Nursing Chair assists the person in contacting the Oklahoma Board of Nursing for further counseling if deemed necessary.

Statement of Responsibility

The Division of Nursing of Northwestern Oklahoma State University is approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing. Applicants for Oklahoma Advanced Practice Nurse licensure must meet all state and federal requirements to hold an Oklahoma license to practice nursing. In addition to completing a state-approved nursing education program, requirements include submission of an application for advanced practice licensure with a national criminal history records search and successfully passing the national certification examination. To be granted a license, an applicant must have the legal right to reside in the United States (United States Code Chapter 8, Section 1621).  The Board has the right to deny a license to an individual with a history of criminal background, disciplinary action on another health-related license or certification, or judicial declaration of mental incompetence [59 O.S. §567.8]. These cases are considered on an individual basis at the time application for licensure is made, with the exception of felony charges. An individual with a felony conviction cannot apply for licensure for at least five years after completion of all sentencing terms, including probation and suspended sentences, unless a presidential or gubernatorial pardon is received [59 O.S. §567.5 & 567.6].

Nursing Academics

Rn to bsn program.

Northeastern State University offers an online RN to BSN program that can be completed in as few as 10 months. The curriculum for this accredited online nursing program consists of 30 upper division credit hours and is designed to build on your previous education and experience and prepare you for a professional nursing career. The program will also provide a strong foundation for a graduate education in nursing.

Major areas of emphasis include family nursing, community health, leadership, and research. Graduates are prepared to provide primary health care in diverse settings; to provide education to individuals, families, and community groups; and to continue lifelong learning.

• Graduation from a state-approved associate degree or diploma nursing program
• Current RN license (submitted to Undergraduate Admissions)
• Overall 2.0 GPA with no grade below a "C" in nursing support (upper and lower division) and lower-division nursing courses

Diploma graduates and those from non-HLC accredited nursing programs must successfully complete the NACE nursing proficiency tests scoring 60% or higher prior to admission. NURS 3053: Health Assessment

Health Assessment focuses on holistic health assessment of patients using Gordon's functional health patterns as an organizing framework. Current issues in professional nursing practice related to nursing process are included. Prerequisite: NURS 3003 or concurrent, or permission of instructor.

NURS 3103: TRANSCULTURAL NURSING

Duration : 7 null weeks

Students learn about developing the ability to provide culturally competent care to individuals, families and groups from diverse backgrounds. This course provides opportunities to increase cultural awareness and decrease health disparities. Restrictions: Admission to nursing major or instructor permission is required.

NURS 3223: Person & Family Centered Nursing Care

Students learn about promoting person-centered quality care across the lifespan. The focus of nursing care is on the holistic health promotion of the individual while in the family context. Current Trends and Issues in Nursing focuses on contemporary nursing issues in today's changing healthcare field. Emphasis is on legal and ethical considerations, changes in health care delivery systems and the responsibilities of the nurse. Prerequisite: NURS 3003 or concurrent, or permission of instructor.

NURS 4133: Fundamentals of Nursing Research

Students will learn about similarities and differences of quantitative and qualitative studies as well as statistical methods utilized in nursing research. Legal and ethical issues, theoretical and conceptual frameworks, and literature reviews are examined. Emphasis is on the nurse as a consumer of nursing research. Prerequisite: Statistics with a minimum grade of C and NURS 3003 Professional Nursing Role with a minimum grade of C. Concurrent enrollment is allowed for NURS 3003. Restrictions: Admission to nursing major or instructor permission is required.

NURS 4113: Population Health Nursing

Students learn theory and research relevant to nursing practice and public health practice to promote and preserve the health of populations. Prerequisite: NURS 3003 Professional Nursing Role with a minimum grade of C or concurrent enrollment. Restrictions: Admission to nursing major or instructor permission is required.

NURS 4213: Nursing Leadership and Management

Students learn about leadership and management skills relevant to professional practice. Prerequisite: NURS 3003 Professional Nursing Role with a minimum grade of C or concurrent enrollment. Restrictions: Admission to nursing major or instructor permission is required.

NURS 4953: Professional Nursing Synthesis

Students advance the scholarship of nursing by participating in scholarly inquiry as a team member and applying professional nursing skills and concepts developed throughout the nursing program with an emphasis on evidence-based practice. Group work to be expected. Prerequisite: NURS 3003, NURS 3053, NURS 3103, NURS 3223, NURS 4003, NURS 4133, NURS 4113, and NURS 4213. Restrictions: Admission to nursing major or permission of instructor is required.

NURS 4973: Professional Nursing Practice

Duration : 16 weeks

The student will engage in experiential learning that combines professional nursing knowledge and skills. This experience allows direct application of course content in the applied setting under guidance and supervision from faculty and approved preceptors. Probably the 20 hours spent for leadership/management field experience in a clinical setting (this is the same as before in the NURS 4294 course). Prerequisite: NURS 3003, NURS 3053, NURS 3103, NURS 3223, NURS 4003, NURS 4133, NURS 4113, NURS 4213, and NURS 4953. Restrictions: Admission to nursing major or instructor permission is required. Students must have completed the credentialing process, a preceptor agreement, and have an approved facility contract prior to enrolling in this course.

Students finalize their thesis or capstone project under faculty supervision. The thesis or capstone project will be presented and defended. Students prepare for dissemination of their work for a broader audience, complete a portfolio, and consider plans for post-graduate studies. Students must re-enroll if the thesis or capstone project is not successfully presented and defended. Course may be repeated twice if additional time is needed. Prerequisite: Complete MSN core courses and 12 hours specialization courses. Concurrent enrollment allowed. Restrictions: Admission into the Master’s of Science in Nursing Degree Program. NURS 5810: Practicum

Duration: 16 Weeks

Students work with a preceptor and a faculty mentor to develop and practice competencies in their selected nursing option. The capstone proposal is completed and section drafts are submitted. Students must re- enroll in the course until 200 practicum hours are completed and the capstone proposal final draft is submitted. May be repeated for up to four credit hours. Credit Hours: 1-4 Other contact hours per week: Varies Prerequisite: NURS 5213 Cultural Competency: Regional and Global Perspectives, NURS 5293 Advanced Research and Evidence Based Practice for Health Professionals, and at least 6-credit hours of specialization courses. The bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree gives nurses the expertise they need to expand their professional horizons. With about 70% of nurses holding at least a BSN degree [1] , it’s the most common nursing degree.

The degree can also make you a hotter commodity on the job market, with about 70% of healthcare employers strongly preferring BSN-prepared nurses [2] .

Online BSN degree programs can be challenging and complex, with hands-on training an essential part of the process. At the same time, online education is increasingly popular in nursing and many other fields of study, with learners gravitating toward the added time and flexibility of the online format.

Still, not all online BSN programs are created equal, and the online experience can vary considerably from what you’d find at a brick-and-mortar campus program.

Herzing University [3] , a higher education system headquartered in Wisconsin with 11 campuses in eight states and an extensive online education division, offers an online BSN program that can be completed in as few as three years and has received recognition as one of the country’s top online bachelor’s programs. NurseJournal recently spoke with two representatives from Herzing University’s nursing school to learn more about online BSN programs, how they work, and what students should look for:

The responses have been edited for length and clarity.

Why should a student pursue a BSN instead of an ADN?

Stewart: The biggest difference that I tell students with the associate degree in nursing (ADN) and the BSN is that the BSN is going to open more doors.

If you need to get your RN license to maybe advance your career but plan on staying in the nursing field, then an ADN may be more appropriate because you already have the education for the position that you’re in. But if you want to go into areas like management, nursing education, or become a nurse practitioner, then you will need to have that BSN. It is definitely based on the goals of the student and how long they have to invest in their education.

How is earning a BSN online a good option for the modern nursing student?

Love: The BSN is the most common and most sought-after degree in the nursing profession. The BSN is an ideal option for many prospective nurses, and a well-designed online BSN program can be an outstanding fit for today’s busy student.

That said, to be as transparent as I can be, students really need good time-management skills and to independently be able to look at the syllabus, assignments, and deadlines… and make a plan to ensure that whatever is due is completed with enough time to get back to the instructor in case they have questions. Even though it’s online, the rigor is still there.

What do you see as the ideal candidate for an online BSN?

Love: While many people can succeed in an online program, the online format may be best suited to someone with a background in healthcare. Typically, for individuals with no background in healthcare whatsoever, medical terminology is like a different language. On top of that, you have the actual pieces of nursing. Those students would typically do a whole lot better in a face-to-face environment where they will have more structured support almost every day, as opposed to the online, asynchronous (or more self-paced) format.

What are some misconceptions incoming students have about online BSN programs?

Stewart: There is sometimes a disconnect between the entering student and what is realistic with their expectations. A lot of people believe that online [learning] is flexible, where you can do it whenever you want. Flexibility is a benefit in many online programs, but prelicensure nursing programs also typically include in-person components, such as clinical experiences in real-world healthcare settings.

For our LPNs and EMTs coming in, the biggest difference that they need to understand is that with nursing, you may know some of the skills, but nursing is based on a lot of evidence-based research that guides our decision-making. It’s good to come in with related experience and skills, but our program will also train students in how nurses think and operate – it’s a new mindset we try to cultivate in our students.

What might the typical week look like for an online BSN student?

Love: As part of their coursework in the program, students will encounter classroom-style didactic learning, a lab piece for skills components, and the clinical piece, which can be hands-on or virtual. With either approach to clinicals, students are learning to care for the patient.

With all that being said, just three courses that they’re taking require anywhere from 3-5 hours per week to be minimally prepared. Depending on the student, it may require a little bit more.

Stewart: While I was in nursing school at Herzing…I also worked three 12-hour days. On those days, I checked my announcements and email, but I didn’t do any homework. During the four days that I was off from work, I would get up as if I were going to work, and I would plan an 8-12-hour study day.

Was it hard? Yes. Was it difficult to stay focused sometimes? Yes. But, the goal was to complete my coursework and 200-300 practice exam questions per day in preparation for the National Council Licensure Examination [4] or NCLEX®, which you must pass to become an RN.

In what ways did taking courses online allow you to balance other responsibilities?

Stewart: It was a benefit because when you’re on campus, those days and times are set. With work, if you’re working three 12-hour days, those days tend to not be set. While it offers a rigorous schedule, the online format is still more flexible than traditional in-person nursing programs for working students — you just have to find the right balance, and you need to know that the time you’re not at work needs to be dedicated to school.

What are tips you can give to help students get the most out of their online experience?

Stewart: Ask questions early, and don’t be afraid to develop a relationship with your instructor. Make it so your instructor knows your name. You want to develop that relationship early.

Don’t cheat. There are a lot of resources out there — good and bad — to help facilitate learning. But if you cheat and start looking at Quizlets or other things… for exams and assignments… it’s going to come back to bite you when you take the NCLEX. You may somehow make it through the entire nursing program on a lie, but when you go to take the NCLEX, you are not going to know how to answer those questions.

How does Herzing support students in an online format?

Love: We are huge student advocates; that is number one. Our priority is to ensure that the student is getting an exceptional education. We want to hear from our students about what they are not getting or what we are missing. We want that close connection with them because online [learning] can sometimes feel like I’m out here by myself, but we don’t like students to feel like that. They need to feel connected and supported in a program that is the right fit for them.
